We’re really excited to announce that our contract for giving First in Essex marketing support has been extended until 31st October 2015.
Our Account Director, Paula Middleton has been working with both First in Essex and Eastern Counties since August this year giving them both much needed marketing support within their operating areas.
However we said a sad farewell to First Eastern Counties last week when Paula did an official handover with their new marketing manager. We do however wish them all the best for the future – you know where we are when you need us!
Paula’s support will now be focused in Essex where she will continue to work with the team there for another month.

“It’s been great working with First Essex and Eastern Counties over the past few months. Through my previous life at First I obviously knew many of the staff and it’s been lovely working with them again. However, I’ve been working with some new people too and that’s been equally pleasing.
I’m looking forward to another month in Essex before bowing out and moving onto something new.”
At Abyss we’re really excited about just finishing our first project in partnership with the public transport unit at Aberdeenshire Council.
Our remit was to create and design a new livery and support materials for their Central Buchan on demand responsive door to door bus service.
This service operates anywhere within a designated area and best of all it’s for everyone.
So, with some of our team having the ideal local knowledge we set to work about creating something unique. We wanted to capture the fertile farmlands of the north east of Scotland as well as their unique local dialect. As part of the livery we were therefore proud to introduce the Doric Fleet – The Heid Bummer, The Nickum and The Auld Man – each and every one of them is an adventure!
Martin Hall, Principal Officer (Information and Infrastructure), Aberdeenshire Council comments; “At Aberdeenshire Council we engaged the services of Abyss Marketing to support us with the design of a new vehicle livery for our Dial a Bus service launching in Mintlaw and the surrounding area. With their local knowledge through Account Director Paula Middleton, Abyss struck upon an ideal design. The design captured the identity of Scotland whilst linking to the local Doric language which really gives it a great community feel.
Paula and the team at Abyss were an absolute pleasure to work with on this livery project with all communications being delivered on time and within budget. Their enthusiasm for the project was infectious and we would not hesitate to use Abyss Marketing again in the future.”

A member of the Doric Fleet
At Abyss we’ve been working with a company called FWT. FWT is part of the larger CHK Group and they do a huge amount of work in the public transport company.
So many of our followers will recognise the name FWT immediately as they no doubt deal with them every day when it comes to designing timetables and maps.
FWT approached us to help them with some marketing materials for themselves for a change. So we set to work with them and created a set of product sheets as well as a glossy company folder.
Mark Tredwell, Group Sales & Marketing Manager for CHK Group comments;
“I am extremely happy with the finalised product folder produced by the team at Abyss. After my initial brief, it was fantastic to have a couple of versions to compare and contrast and this led to a lot of worthwhile discussion and debate internally.
Paula and the design team were very patient throughout and were flexible in our changing demands. I’d certainly recommend Abyss to others, should they want their creative handled by a professional and helpful team.”
Not a bad vote of confidence!

September Jump In
We love it when a plan comes together, don’t you? You’ll remember that we very recently shared with you that we’ve been giving marketing and PR support to Dial-a-Community Bus and DAB Plus?
DAB along with their partners held a community fun day and road safety event last Saturday in Mintlaw. The event was a huge success and thankfully all the sun dancing we did worked – cause the weather was fairly decent!
Working with the team at DAB was an absolute pleasure and it looks like the feeling was mutual.
Rachel Milne, General Manager, Dial-a-Community Bus & DAB Plus, comments; “Abyss has gone above and beyond what we originally thought we needed for this event. Paula has been superb and has come up with ideas for marketing which we would never have thought of. It has been a pleasure to work with Abyss and we hope we can do more with them in the future.”
There was lots and lots of brainstorming involved with this project and we had some fun pulling our wacky ideas together.

Alan Brown, Manager DAB Plus, adds; “Whereas we could have done the basic marketing ourselves, we really wanted someone to come in, spot the gaps, come up with some innovative ideas and then manage it for us. Paula and Abyss have done that and really took the stress out of the marketing for us.”
As mentioned in our tweets last week, Abyss Marketing is now working with First in both Essex and Norfolk and Suffolk until the end of September 2015.
Marketing support is being given during this period and one particular member of the team at Abyss is relishing the challenge of it all!
Ex First marketing manager Paula Middleton joined Abyss last August as account director and hasn’t looked back since. However, helping First has meant a trip back down memory lane for her.

Paula comments; “It was really exciting to be approached by First and asked if I could give them some much needed marketing support in the short term. In many ways working with them is like coming home and it’s amazing how quickly I’ve fallen back into the role and their unique ways of working and doing things.
What’s also really nice is working with old colleagues again and some new faces too. There’s lots going on so I’m really looking forward to getting my sleeves rolled up and delivering some big marketing campaigns on behalf of First in both regions.”
COMMUNITY FUN DAY FOR ALL AGES AT MINTLAW COMMUNITY CENTRE
Dab Training, along with their partners, Aberdeenshire Council, Aberdeen Community Safety Trust and MACBI (Mintlaw & Central Buchan Initiative), are planning a fun packed event at Mintlaw Community Centre on Saturday 15th August, 10am until 4pm.
The event, billed as a Community Fun Day and Road Safety Event, has a serious underlying message running throughout – namely road safety.
Alan Brown, DAB Plus Manager adds; “With a significant number of people being injured and losing their lives on our roads in the north east of Scotland, DAB Training and our partners wanted to create an event that will inform and educate people about how to stay safe whilst driving.
Although it’s a serious message being portrayed, we wanted the event to be fun for everyone. There’s going to be lots going on during the event including a bouncy castle and some gladiator style dualling, lots of different stalls and something to eat and drink that appeals to everyone.
This is a fantastic local initiative based right in the heart of the community at Mintlaw and we’re looking to welcome locals and visitors from further afield on the day.”
On the day there really will be something to amuse, educate and entertain people of all ages. Entry is free, the day starts at 10am and finishes at 4pm at Mintlaw Community Centre, Newlands Road, Mintlaw.
A full list of activities planned for the day is as follows:
- Scottish Fire and Rescue Services will have a static display of a fire tender and RTC kit. They’ll also be performing a demo casualty extraction at around 1pm.
- DAB Plus will have a brake reaction timer on hand to demonstrate real stopping distances. They’ll also have beer goggles to simulate the effects of drink in the system – a serious message in a fun way.
- Local police unit will be in attendance.
- Heart Start Grampian will be demonstrating through participation the hands only CPR method.
- The Owl and Pussycat is a local charity who are providing a walk round interaction with some of their owls, some of which have starred in the Harry Potter films.
- Duthie Motors will be providing information on basic car care checks.
- R&M Leisure will be providing a fun dual racing simulator. Race safely against the clock or each other.
- Aberdeenshire Council will be in attendance with the GetAbout cycle roadshow and will also be giving advice on child seat safety.
- Theatre Modo are doing ongoing displays during the day encouraging youth interaction in positive diversionary activity.
- Buchan Community Safety Group will be educating people on the difference between pub measures and home measure.
- Local businesses taking part on the day include Unique Jewels and Jo Jo Jams.
- MACBI will be running demonstration classes for some of the events held at the Community Centre.
All we need now is your help! Tell all your friends and come along and support this really worthwhile community event. Oh and bring the sunshine with you!!

July Jump In
This year we’ve helped out with the Windmill Inn beer festival by producing their programme for them.
The annual event, which is sponsored by Brian G Hancock takes place in the Windmill Inn every year. The Inn is based in a small village called Linton, near Wetherby.
Taking place on Saturday 18th July, it’s a great annual event that attracts people from surrounding local villages. With a little bit of luck the sun will shine on them for this year’s event and that will entice people out to sample a local beer or two!!
